Washington State and Mandatory Long Term Care

In Seattle and the state of Washington, there have been recent efforts to establish a public long-term care insurance program that would be funded through payroll taxes. In 2019, the state legislature passed the Long-Term Care (LTC)Trust Act, which created a new program to provide long-term care benefits to eligible individuals starting in 2025.

The program is designed to provide up to $36,500 in benefits to eligible individuals to cover the costs of long-term care services. (Now compare that if you have your own plan, can you imagine the drastic difference in benefits?)

However, the implementation of the program has been delayed due to concerns about its funding and administrative structure. As of September 2021, the program is still in the planning stages, and the state is seeking input from stakeholders on how best to implement it.

If you are interested in learning more about Long Term Care Insurance in Seattle or Washington state, I recommend contacting a licensed insurance professional or consulting resources such as the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner or the Washington Health Care Authority.
